This standard applies to foam metals with a porosity of 50% or higher. The compression test is a quasi-static strain test performed at ambient temperature.


The force measurement system of the testing machine must be calibrated in accordance with ISO 7500-1, and its accuracy should be level 1 or better. Unless otherwise specified, the testing machine must be capable of quasi-static testing under a constant speed crosshead.


A pair of parallel pressing plates made of hard materials that can bear the loading pressure are added to both ends of the sample. The working surfaces of the upper and lower pressing plates should be parallel and polished. During the test, there should be no lateral relative displacement and rotation between the indenter and the pressure plate; after the test, there should be no permanent deformation on the surface of the pressure plate. Before applying lubricant to the surface of the platen, clean it with a non-corrosive solvent. The hardness of the pressure surface of the pressure plate is at least 60HRC.


To measure the compressive strain, an extensometer or a displacement measuring device must be installed between the two parallel pressure plates. The accuracy level of the extensometer should meet the requirements of ISO 9513. When determining the performance test of compressive strain, elastic gradient and specified compressive strength, an extensometer with accuracy better than Class 1 should be used.
